The RBC GranFondo says the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) has released its report of this year’s Whistler event.

AWARE has be working with the GranFondo over the past few years to help the event achieve zero waste status. According to the GranFondo, using waste diversion stations and AWARE volunteers, of the 759.76 kg of waste collected at Olympic Plaza and parking lots during the 2018 event, 673.76 kg was successfully diverted from the landfill.

Across the event, a total of 88.69% of waste was diverted from landfill. Waste is defined as anything from food scraps and organics, to soft plastics, cardboard and multi-laminates.

An event is considered Zero Waste when 90% or more total waste does not end up in the landfill.

AWARE’s report also contained a list of recommendations and best practices that the event plans to act on going forward.
