A group of women in the Sea to Sky corridor are launching a local chapter of a non-profit organization ‘100 Women Who Care’ that donates $10,000 to charities each quarter.

The concept began in Michigan in 2006 with one women wanting to supply new mothers in need with a crib. In just an hour, with the help of friends she was able to raise $12,800. It was then that the first 100 Women Who Care was formed. There are now 400 hundred chapters of the group worldwide.

Squamish resident Catherine Trueman who founded the Sea to Sky chapter last month says she heard about the organization through a friend in Kelowna and knew she lived in a community that could also do it. Trueman is on the hunt for like minded women who have a desire to give back.

The goal is to donate $10,000 four times a year to a community non-profit or charity of choice, with each woman involved giving $100 at each of the four meetings. Organizations to recieve $10,000 are nominated and voted on by members at each meeting, with membership open to the whole Sea to Sky corridor, from Lions Bay to Pemberton.

A launch event will be held on Wednesday, April 19th from 7-8:30 PM at the Executive Suites Hotel and Resort in Squamish, with future meetings also planed for Whistler and Pemberton. Trueman says the launch event will be more of an information session to “find out how the organization works, what kind of volunteer commitment we need from people to build our membership to get it running.” She says they have about 40 women who have so far expressed interest.
