A large condo fire in Whistler saw numerous residents evacuated late Saturday night. The fire took place at the North Star condo complex in Whistler Village.

Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Emergency Program Coordinator Erin Marriner says that they don’t have complete numbers of those who were evacuated but believe between 60-80 people had to evacuate their homes. Marriner says they have connected with 9 locals who were permanent residents of the building.

The belief is that many of those affected were tourists to the region that may have found other places to stay or simply lift the area, however the RMOW is encouraging anyone who hasn’t registered with Emergency Social Services to do so by calling 604-966-4845.

8 Red Cross/Emergency Social Services (ESS) volunteers attended the scene to assist those in need early Sunday morning. A group lodging centre was setup at Spring Creek School as hotels were full due to the long weekend. Those who were evacuated did manage to find places to stay either at hotels or with friends and family according to Marriner. She says that only one family was referred to a hotel, and so the lodging centre was not used.

The lodging centre will be taken down today as ESS only assists for the first 72 hours after an emergency. A community recovery meeting will be held today for residents displaced by the fire. The meeting will provide more information on the details of the fire and related damage as well as information on recovery and critical incident stress management, and available resources in the community. The meeting will take place at the Whistler Public Library at 12:30 today.
