Good mental health isn’t about being happy all the time. In fact, a healthy mental life includes the full range of human emotions.   Allowing ourselves to recognize, express and deal with our emotions (the ones we like…and the ones we don’t), is important for our mental health.

Heavy feelings lighten when you put them into words. When we voice our emotions, the pain gives way. It’s important to understand and name how we feel. Angry? Glad? Frustrated? Sad? It’s all good.

This Mental Health Week (May 3rd – May 9th), don’t be uncomfortably numb. #GetReal about how you feel.

Our friend Serena Ryder has been on her own mental health journey.   We had the chance to have a real conversation with her about her own self discovery around mental health.  Serena was able to put her entire journey into her new album entitled “The Art of Falling Apart.”   Serena talked to us about how expressing and dealing with our emotions – even when they are uncomfortable – can make us feel better.   She has discovered that focusing on intense emotions doesn’t make our emotions worse, in fact, it’s one of the best ways to quiet our emotions and give them a voice.  Serena has allowed herself to be in the “emotional moment” as a way of self healing, which is beautifully represented in her first single off the album called “Better Now”.

Everyone deserves to feel well, and understanding our emotions is a part of feeling well.
