Whistler Half Marathon – Press Release

March 24th, 2020

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis that has ground the world to a halt, the Whistler Half Marathon, presented by Smartwool is cancelled. Originally scheduled for June 6th, 2020 this would have been the 10th annual edition of the running race that was born and raised here in Whistler, BC.

The decision to cancel was made due to the ever evolving global situation of COVID-19. As the threat of the virus is growing rapidly, event planning can not continue with a clear conscience. “I am immensely disappointed to announce the cancellation of the event. We are proud of what this event has become in our wonderful community over the years, but now is the time to halt what we are doing and do the right thing for all stakeholders” says Dave Clark, founder and race director. “Our planning for this cancellation has carefully considered our participants, crew, partners, the community, and or non profit society. We understand this affects everyone and our goal is to be as flexible as we can, providing participants with as many options as possible.” Clark adds.

Registered athletes will be provided a number of different options which include:

1) Donate registration fee to our new Community Recovery Fund to help put food on the tables of the most affected families in our community.
2) Defer registration to the 2021 event.
3) Defer Registration to the 2022 event
4) Apply for a refund on registration fee less a 15% administration fee

In addition we are inviting all registered and non registered athletes to join us for our FREE virtual race in June. Runners will be able to register online, then choose to run their distance of choice in the location of their choice. Once complete they will be able to upload their results from their favorite activity tracking app on a webpage to share with our run community. Smartwool is joining us in this effort to offer random door prizing to be awarded to some lucky participants.

This decision from our board of directors was not made without great consideration for all involved, and we would like to recognize the additional input and support from our partners at Smartwool and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
