April showers bring May flowers, but how do you keep the kids entertained while the rain is pouring down?

Easy!  Here are some fun indoor activities, as well as a few outdoor activities if you’re feeling adventurous!

Bake

Not only is baking the perfect opportunity to teach your child a few skills in the kitchen, it’ll also give them a chance to practice measuring and learn about fractions.  Most pre-assembled cake and cookie mixes only require adding a few ingredients which will help cut down on the mess left behind.

Build a Fort

Use couch cushions, pillows and blankets to turn your living room into the ultimate indoor fort.  Use extra pillows and blankets to make it cozy inside to create the perfect reading nook.

Read Stories

Sit in a circle and take turns reading stories to one another.  If your kids are too young to read, you can make up a story together and take turns filling in the details.

Play Board Games

Organize a family board game day and let everyone pick their favourite for the family to play, or create your own using items from around the house

Get Crafty

Kids love arts and crafts, and rainy days are the perfect days to get creative!  You can paint, colour, make magazine or construction paper collages, or try something special for rainy days like using popsicle sticks and empty plastic containers to build a boat.  Later on, you can test it out in the puddles to see if it will float!

Hide & Seek

In today’s world, classic games like hide & seek (in real life, not Roblox) are often forgotten.  A rainy day is the perfect day to find new hiding spots, and if your kids are a little older, you can even turn out the lights for a game of hide & seek in the dark!  Looking for another twist?  Instead of seeking each other, set a kitchen timer and hide it.  The kids have until the timer goes off to find it!

Have an Indoor Picnic

Have the kids help assemble their favourite picnic foods, and lay a blanket down in your family room for a fun picnic, minus the ants!

Create a Home Movie Theatre

Dim the lights, pop some popcorn, grab a blanket and get cozy on the couch!  Pick a fun, family movie for a special “home theatre” viewing.

Take it Outside

If you’re feeling adventurous, slide on your rain boots, splash pants and rain coat and take the kiddies outside to jump in the puddles! If you made toy boats earlier in the day, now is the perfect time to test them out to see if they float!
