Two local elementary schools are getting new accessible playgrounds, thanks to provincial funding.

Roberts Creek Elementary School on the Sunshine Coast and Brackendale Elementary School in Squamish will each receive $105,000 for new equipment as part of the new Playground Equipment Program (PEP) announced last May by Premier John Horgan and Minister of Education Rob Fleming.

In the past Parent Advisory Councils fundraised for new equipment, but the provincial government now wants to ensure children have safe playgrounds while also allowing parents to focus on their children’s success.

“As a parent, I understand first-hand how tough it can be for schools and parents to find the time and volunteers to fundraise for playground equipment and activities” said Flemming. “…parents should not have to become dedicated fundraisers in their spare time.”

The playgrounds are funded based on the greatest need, with priority given to schools where there is no playground or existing infrastructure is aging. School districts can apply for the funding by sending a list of priorities in their capital plan submissions in June each year.

This year, the PEP will invest $5 million in 50 new playgrounds in 34 school districts across B.C. The playgrounds will be built over the next six months and are expected to be ready for kids to play on in the fall.
