Tried of buying groceries only to have some of the food you buy spoil in what seems to be only a few days after you purchase it?   Here are some helpful tips to make your food last longer….

Apples – can last up to 77 days long if placed in the fridge.

Mushrooms – putting mushrooms in a paper bag before putting them in the fridge will help prevent sliminess.

Peaches, plums and cherries are better stored outside of the fridge.  Pro tip:  washing your fruit with a vinegar / water mix (1 part distilled vinegar to 10 parts water) will not only clean your fruit, but make fruit like berries last 2 weeks longer.

Eggs last longer in the freezer, but crack and beat the eggs first before storing.  Freezing eggs in their shells will make them explode.

Avoid using plastic and switch to glass storage containers with a good seal.   Removing lettuce from the packaging and placing in a glass store container with a paper towel will help extend the life of your lettuce.   The paper towel will absorb any moisture keeping your lettuce crisp and ready to use!

Turn old vegetables into homemade stock.   When your vegetables or herbs start to turn, pop them into the freezer.  When you are ready you can turn them into an amazing stock.   Carrots, Peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms, leeks, thyme and parsley all make flavourful options.  You can use your homemade stock for soups or stews.
