District of Squamish – Press Release

April 15th, 2020

The District of Squamish has declared a state of local emergency to respond to a wildland interface fire originating in the Upper Squamish Valley, within the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD). Due to the rapid movement of the fire, the District of Squamish has issued an Evacuation Alert for residents within District boundaries in Paradise Valley.

The District of Squamish has been in close contact with lead agencies BC Wildfire Service, Squamish RCMP and the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD), and issued the Evacuation Alert this evening following their recommendation.

Agencies are also coordinating efforts with the Squamish Nation as the Ch’iyakmesh Reserve is also under Evacuation Alert.

The fire was reported at 4:15 p.m. on April 15, 2020. The fire grew rapidly in the first few hours and is estimated to be 60 hectares currently.

Squamish Fire Rescue (SFR) has two crews assisting (10 members) with one engine, and a structural protection unit. SFR is supporting the efforts by protecting structures and homes directly threatened by fire.

All visitors and non-resident property owners currently in the Squamish Valley and Paradise Valley areas are directed to return to their primary residence. A number of homes have been evacuated within the SLRD and accommodation has been arranged for residents at Squamish hotels. Squamish Valley residents beyond Magee Road are also on Evacuation Alert.

Canadian Red Cross is engaged to support evacuees on Thursday.

The public is reminded that wildfire can be dangerous and unpredictable. Please avoid the area.

Further updates will be provided when new information is available.
