A skier has died in the Pemberton back-country.

Search and Rescue (SAR) say they responded to a call to assist a back-country skier on April 15th who had fallen into a 30 meter deep crevasse near Rhododendron Mountain and was unresponsive.

SAR attended the scene with a medical and extraction team but unfortunately the 38 year-old male succumbed to his injuries.

Pemberton District Search and Rescue Manager David MacKenzie says the extraction from the crevasse was a very technical operation for the team, and that a second team from Whistler SAR was dispatched to provide assistance.

The public is reminded that skiing in back-country areas means severe weather and avalanches are real hazards. You and everyone in your group should be self-sufficient—carrying the necessary gear and have avalanche training.
