Whistler Blackcomb says the new Blackcomb gondola will not be operating on November 22nd (opening day).

Chief Operating Officer Pete Sonntag says that despite the most valiant efforts of their team, the lift will not be ready on time. The scheduled opening for the gondola is now December 14th.

“As hard as we’ve worked, we have not been able to overcome a handful of challenges along the way that have slowed things down. We’re very confidant we’ll have it by the 14th… It’s a pretty unique lift and special one, and I think people will appreciate it when they get the chance to ride it.”

The new 10 passenger lift is part of a $66 million investment by Vail Resorts and also includes a new 6-person chair lift for the Emerald Express and a faster 4-person high speed Cat Skinner chair lift. Whistler Blackcomb confirmed that both Emerald Express and Cat Skinner are completed and will be operational on November 22nd.

Sonntag noted that if there is snow on Blackcomb mountain, runs will be open and accessible via alternate lifts while the Blackcomb gondola is completed. “We’re disappointed to have to share that news, but we want to do it right. We want to make sure that once it’s open it’s good to go for the season”.
