A local community initiative is appealing to the public for assistance.

Boomerang Bags Pemberton wants to help locals cut down on plastic bags and help those of us that forget our reusable shopping bags.

The community driven project sees a group of volunteers make cloth bags that are left at Pemberton Valley Supermarket for people to borrow when they need them. The idea is that when you go for your next shop, you drop the bag off for the next person to use.

The concept, originally from Australia started in 2013, and has now grown to over 250 communities worldwide.

Fances Dickinson, Founder of Boomerang Bags Pemberton says her team of volunteers have made approximately 2,000 bags using donated textiles that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.

Dickinson says the issue they are currently facing is the “boomerang-ing” concept, and that the bags are not being returned for others to use; “Boomerang Bags are kind of for an emergency. Everyone needs to start using their own bags, everyone should have in their own supplies some of their reusable bags and should be using them on a regular basis at the grocery store”. Dickinson says the bags are there to supplement people’s own stock.
