A student from MEI Secondary in Abbotsford has died while on a ski trip to Whistler-Blackcomb.

The school issued a statement saying that on Friday, 11 students and 2 staff who were members of the school’s Ski & Snowboard Club had travelled to Whistler.

That afternoon the school was notified that one student was missing which resulted in a search by Whistler personnel. The statement says that ‘results of the search led to the devastating news that one student had died’.

Whistler-Blackcomb says in a statement that Ski Patrol was notified that a member of the group was missing on Blackcomb Mountain on Friday; ‘Patrol conducted a search in the area where the individual was thought to have entered. The individual, a 14 year-old male was found unresponsive below a large cliff area on Blackcomb Mountain’.

CPR was performed on the youth and a Blackcomb doctor attended the scene and pronounced the individual deceased. RCMP and the coroner are currently investigating.

The school say’s they are working with staff, students, parents and the community to process the news.

Whistler-Blackcomb Chief Operating Officer, Dave Brownlie extended the organisation’s “deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends”.
