Woodfibre LNG (WLNG) has applied to the National Energy Board (NEB) for a 40 year export licence.

In a statement WLNG says if approved, the licence would allow the export of approximately 2.1 million tonnes of liquid natural gas per year for 40 years from the Woodfibre LNG project, located 7 kilometers south-west of Squamish in Howe Sound.

The project previously received a 25 year licence in December 2013, however amendments to NEB regulations in 2015 increased the maximum possible term to 40 years. WLNG states that all of the required permits, regulatory conditions and environmental assessments would remain in place for the lifetime of the project.

Byng Giraud, Country Manager and Vice President of WLNG Corporate Affairs says; “This application, if successful, would provide even more assurance to government, First Nations partners, stakeholders and potential customers of the certainty of this project.”

The application to extend the licence was sent to the NEB on October 26th, 2016. WLNG Associate Vice President of Corporate Communications, Jennifer Siddon says the decision was made to apply at that time based on a “project development standpoint”. According to Siddon it was around that time that the board of WLNG’s parent company, Pacific Oil & Gas Limited approved the funds for the project to move forward and work begun on the Front End Engineering Design (FEED).

The NEB will now determine if ‘the quantity of gas to be exported does not exceed the surplus remaining after due allowance has been made for the reasonably foreseeable requirements for use in Canada…’ in accordance with the National Energy Board Act.

The public can submit comments on the licence extension request from February 9th to March 13th 2017, in the following ways:
