The Squamish Food Bank says their services were accessed over 5,000 times by the community last year.

The organization says that number is clients either receiving their support on a regular basis or just occasionally, approximately 40% of their clients attend a Food Bank day intermittently.

Food Bank Manager Christina Rupp says the numbers are similar to 2015 but they’ve seen changes in demographics. “Low income working families and individuals are increasing as well as those on a fixed income. Yet some people have been displaced by the cost of living in our town and have moved to other communities.” says Rupp.

Food donations have increased in the last 12 months. Approximately 70,000 lbs of perishable and non perishable food was donated in 2016. Rupp says the outpouring of food and cash donations during the holiday season was greatly appreciated.
