Sea to Sky Orphan Cubs

At least 5 orphaned bears from the Sea to Sky region were brought to the Langley Critter Care facility this year.

Here’s an update on the cubs:

We checked in with Sylvia Dolson, Executive Director of Bear Smart, to see how the cubs are getting along, to which she happily reported: “They’re doing really well! We have 3 Whistler cubs down at Critter Care and they are semi hibernating… The 2 Pemberton boys; they were the smallest cubs at Critter Care admitted. They came in at 12 and 16 lbs…. Super tiny, and they are still eating everyday”. 

She says this is the best outcome for orphaned cubs, because they would not have survived in the wild, or would have been destroyed.

2015 was an unprecedented year for orphaned bears along the Sea to Sky, according to Bear Smart. The Langley Critter Care facility has been pushed to capacity this year with thirty-two bears. Dolson tells us Critter Care is looking to build a new space to help house more animals moving forward.

Dolson says Bear Smart is “looking to help support them build an additional enclosure in Critter Care, and that’s a $100,000.00 venture. These enclosures go down into the ground so the cubs can’t dig out, they have roof space, they have den space, they are electric fenced… these are pretty robust enclosures”. She says with a price tag like that, it will be difficult to raise the money.

She does, however, remain hopeful the new facility will be built and with any luck 2016 will be a little easier on the bear population.
